my manifesto
I am an artist who is compelled to tell stories.
To me, storytelling is like peeling layers of old paint from a wall inside your house and discovering a spectacular mural underneath. Stories that inspire me the most are the ones that force me to look deep into myself, to face fears and anxieties, or to explore the unknowns and complexities of life. These kinds of stories are universal, but like real life don’t always have definitive answers. In fact, they are often more about the questions that are raised as I struggle to define myself, or to find meaning in my day to day journey.
Storytelling connects me to the rich, diverse cultures of humanity. It’s my way of reaching out to the world and speaking to it. By exploring our differences, I reveal our similarities, our kinship, our reliance on each other.
Storytelling as a visual art form has the capacity to move and awaken human consciousness. With the manipulation of composition, or the play of light, shadow and colors, film can turn ordinary life into an extraordinary human cathartic experience.
As a screenwriter and film director, I want to transcend the 3-act narrative structure found in most American film, and tell stories that have a much more visually intense, intimate connection with the characters, rather than just observing what’s happening on the surface.
